Sunset on the Ohio River

I was on my way down to pick my son up from work tonight and decided to take my camera along for the heck of it. Driving down the hill towards Newport on the Levi I saw this awesome sunset. Since the last time I had my tripod setup at the Levi some idiot rent-a-cop tried to have me arrested (to long of a story to go into here), I decided to go down on the river below the Levi to shoot.

The lower shot here is the whole panoramic comprised of 17 photos stitched together, and the upper shot is a cropped section of the panoramic.

Thanks for looking!

Abandonded House, Rt. 32, Newtown, OH

01.16.10

I’ve driven past this house on Route 32 east of Newtown for years and decided to finally get some shots. I ran over at lunch last week hoping to get inside. I love to go into old abandonded houses like this. Lots of textures and colors. But even more interesting is thinking of the history of old places like this.

Here’s the entire gallery. Enjoy!

Snowy Cincinnati Skyline

01.07.10

We had our first major snowfall of the year today. Although having lived in North Dakota for close to 3 years I’d have to say this is nothing. I do however have to admit that the cold bothers me quite a bit more than it did 30 years ago in Minot, North Dakota. I shot this 18 image panorama on my way home tonight. There are also some shots of the Old Towne Center in Mariemont, Ohio which I shot at lunchtime today. There’s one showing what I see from my office window and another that shows our office.

See the rest here. Enjoy!

“Get Away From My Church!”

01.05.10

Ok, so I’m out on a photo trip for the day last Sunday and I drive through New Vienna, Ohio. I come across this awesome looking old Church. I grab a couple of lenses and head out to start shooting. I get 2, yes 2 shots off when this lady comes up to me and yells “Get away from my Church!”. She asked who I was and what I was doing taking photos of “her” Church. She asked if I made it a point of shooting people’s private property. I told her as a matter of fact I do! After that one smart ass comment I decided it would be best to not get into it with her. I don’t know if it was because I was shooting a Church or I felt guilty because I actually skipped Church to go out and shoot for the day.

I was only able to take the time to get 2 detailed shots off before the “encounter”. But once she went back inside I shot this overall photo with my iPhone. Crap, I had a few grand in high-end photographic equipment sitting next to me in the car and I’m posting a photo from my iPhone. I’m pretty sure next time this happens I won’t be as polite!

Here’s the detail shots! Enjoy!

Bavarian’s Beer Sign, Covington, KY

01.05.10

I found this Bavarian’s sign painted on the side of a neighborhood bar in Covington, Kentucky a block from the Mainstrasse area. If you know of any old signs painted on the sides of buildings in the greater Cincinnati area I’d love to shoot them. Please drop me an email with a description of the sign and location. I would appreciate the tip!

Miamitown, OH 3-Sided Mail Pouch Barn

01.05.10

Betsy and I took a ride a few days after Christmas just to get away after all the holiday craziness. Well, for me it was to find this barn. I’m assuming she came along for the ride just to get away?

This is on Route 128 just outside of Miamitown, Ohio. I hate finding a barn with a bunch of “modern” stuff around it, which this one did. The light was also messing with me so I just shot a few. I have at least one shot showing each of the 3 sides. This particular shot was with the sun right behind the barn so I didn’t expect much. With some work, I think it turned out fine.

See the other sides here. Enjoy!

Prestonsburg, KY Mail Pouch Barns

01.05.10

I never travel more than 50 miles away from home without searching the web for Mail Pouch opportunities near where I’m traveling. Irecently traveled to Prestonsburg, KY for work and discovered I would be passing near these 2 barns.

I located the first just outside of town on Route 114 (Old Middle Creek Rd.). My normal method for shooting on private property is to shoot as though I’m supposed to be there. If I can see for sure someone is home, and I don’t fear being shot at, I’ll ask. If it appears no one is around I just go for it and pray there’s no “killer” dogs around. As soon as I got out of the car a dog ran up to me barking, which sent me running back to the car. Just as I got my hand on the door a lady yelled to me, “he won’t bite!”. I wonder how many people have heard that right before getting bit? I’m a trusting sole so I stopped running and the dog was indeed fine. Although he did bark the entire time I was shooting, he was fine with me being there. After I introduced myself and asked if I could shoot the barn she said that would be fine and that it has been shot many times in the past and is “on that computer Internet thingy”.

The second barn was less than a mile away on the same road. I almost drove right past it because it’s hidden behind some trees. This made it difficult to shoot an overall shot. I did get some overall shots, but nothing I was happy with. I love the red versions of the barns so I shot some detail shots and 12 image panoramic (shown above).

In Search of Red Mail Pouches

01.03.10

Every year on New Years Day I take a road trip to shoot photos. Usually I just get in the car and go wherever I end up. This year I missed New Years Day due to “not feeling well”. At least that’s what we’ll call it.

This year instead of just heading out I decided to go find myself some new Mail Pouch Barns to add to my collection of images. I specifically decided to find some of the rare red versions. Here are a few shots from the trip. Stop back soon to see an entire gallery of shots from the day.
